Champagne R & B Soul Line Dance( RBSLD)
Line dance originated in Africa as tribal dances performed in lines and circles. The R & B Soul Line Dance of today is also in line or circle formation. RBSLD is choreographed to the songs and instrumentals of famous recording artists from the 60′s to the present, including Marvin Gaye, WAR, Janet Jackson, Jamie Fox, Beyonce’, and many others. Dances are beginning to advanced level. Because of the influence of the African Slave Trade in the Caribbean and southern United States, particularly the 17th and 18th centuries, Latin dance and the Zydeco dances of New Orleans will be taught.

HeARTbeat Afterschool Dance Program
HeARTbeat provides free dance classes, September through May, to Title 1 elementary schools in Hampton Roads. The program focuses on students that attend schools which hold low academic performance indexes and/or are found in low income areas. The program provides a unique opportunity for students’ grades 3-5 to be a part of a fun, energetic and positive group within their school, but outside of normal school hours. Services are free to students and to schools. HeARTbeat’s goal is to provide dance classes to students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to participate if there were a charge involved.

Students will participate in ballet and jazz dance group dance classes with certified HeARTbeat instructors 1 time per week, usually from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. HeARTbeat aims to improve self-confidence, coordination, students’ respect for themselves and others, and interaction (partner dance dynamic). The program promotes physical exercise and provides these young people a positive and safe after school option. Instructors are assisted by program volunteers as well as parents and school teachers.
Throughout the term, the students learn basic dance concepts, technique and choreography. At the end of each term, approximately 6 weeks, HeARTbeat holds a dance showcase where the students show off what they learned to their peers, teachers, families, and community.
