About the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center
Crispus Attucks Cultural Center, Inc. (CACC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1990 to aid in the restoration and operation of the Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia. Its mission is to present Educational, Civic, and Multicultural programming to enhance learning through the arts. As important as its artistic and educational mission, CACC plays a social role, using the beauty and humanity of the African-American heritage and other cultures to unite people of all races, ages and backgrounds. It seeks to welcome and inspire people of every ethnic and cultural identity in American life. Guided by our respective memories and experiences, together we aim to build a society in which all of us can feel at home.
CACC operates year round inside the Attucks Theatre, in a low income, ethnically diverse community. Our populations served include the greater metropolitan areas of Southeastern Virginia and surrounding suburbs, a diverse community of people culturally, socially and economically. An essential part of our mission is to promote the education and well being of our children, especially those at-risk. The CACC is “very well positioned” to provide year round high quality education programs to help enrich our society by aiding individuals to become more self reliant and to improve the quality of life in their communities.
It provides:
- · A safe haven for underserved children ages 7-17, four days a week, year-round, during after school hours, including summer morning and afternoon hours, through Behind The Lens, Attucks Theatre Summer Arts Program and RISE!.
- · A ‘computer café’ that is accessible to students 40 hours weekly. This high impact program disseminates and further develops computer literacy and computer related educational training.
- · 700 individual participating low income children annually with an advance, progressive curriculum that serve their unmet educational needs and interests, within the safe havens of the Attucks Theatre through over 70,000 visits (single instances of child attendance) and 6,700 hours of educational programming since the Attucks reopening in 2004.
